Where is Kefalos located?
The small Greek village is located in the western part of the birthplace of Hippocrates, on the island of Kos. Kefalos is considered a kind of head of the island, this is due to its close proximity to the city of Kos. The resort is located 40 km from the island's capital of the same name.
The population of Kefalos is only 2638 locals, but this figure increases several times during the season when tourists come to the resort. The national currency is the euro (EUR).
History of the resort
The modern resort of Kefalos is the ancient town of Astypalea, destroyed as early as the 4th century BC. Until then, the city, founded by the Greeks, was the capital of the island of Kos and had an important strategic importance. Today, only ruins remain of the ancient city, which beckon to archaeologists and antiquities enthusiasts.
As for the interpretation of the name of the resort, opinions differ. Some researchers believe that Kefalos is so named because of the village of the same name, which used to be located on this territory. Others believe that the resort has a shape similar to the head of a vulture. In Greek, the word "vulture" is consonant with the name Kefalos.
