Sardinia is the greenest corner of Italy, and the vegetation in Cagliari is a vivid confirmation of this. The city boasts vast forests of evergreen oaks (cork oak, holm oak), olive trees, stone pines, carob trees, and mastic trees, as well as Sicilian fir trees. In freshwater bodies, you can find papyrus, a tall, almost leafless plant with triangular stems that was used in ancient times to make writing material.
The animal life in Cagliari includes squirrels, dormice, hedgehogs, weasels, wildcats, newts, and salamanders. Occasionally, you may come across deer, lynx, foxes, and wolves. The most famous attraction of the local fauna is the incredibly beautiful and graceful pink flamingos. However, there is also wildlife in Cagliari that can cause some trouble, such as vipers.
Thanks to the favorable Mediterranean climate, the residents of Cagliari have created a unique botanical garden, which houses over 2,000 species of plants from all corners of the earth. Some plants can only be found here, as they no longer grow in their natural habitats. The garden also houses an herbarium museum, where you can admire over 50,000 exhibits.
