Mediterranean cuisine is considered one of the healthiest in the world. The absorption of the many nutrients found in vegetable, fish, meat and dairy dishes is aided by the unique climate and the physical activity typical of the Italian resort. That's why Sardinia has so many residents who have celebrated its 100th anniversary.
Traditional Cagliari lunches and dinners start with cold cuts. They can be meat, ham, salami, cheese, olives, crab, snails, clams, caviar, octopus, sea urchins and vegetables in various combinations. Game dishes, loin, sirloin and bacon are highly prized here. Most locals don't mind a hot pork shish kebab. Even the inexpensive restaurants in Cagliari spoil their diners with original dishes of sardines, eel, tuna, swordfish and other sea creatures. The pasta and bakery products are made exclusively from durum wheat.
In Cagliari tourists can be offered a unique delicacy - kasu martsu cheese "made" by... cheese fly larvae, which are not removed before serving. If you dare to try this dish, be careful of your eyes and nose - maggots are capable of making a 15 cm long jump. Casu martso is recognised as a culinary treasure in Sardinia, although, until recently, its sale was forbidden (this product should not be abused, otherwise various health problems could arise). By the way, cassu martso is a powerful aphrodisiac, increasing male potency like Viagra.
Cagliarians have a sweet tooth. Cagliari's finest cafes are ready to pamper locals and tourists with exclusive cakes and pastries on a daily basis. The most famous local dessert is the honey-dipped, fried lemon dough rounds with freshly made curd cheese. Even the best restaurants in Cagliari have this simple but very tasty dish on their menus. The dessert fillings often include cottage cheese, cheese, sultanas, candied fruits, almonds and honey.
