Florence is a fairly safe city, but this does not mean that you can forget about the basic rules here.
Beware of pickpockets, which are quite numerous here. Do not carry large sums of money with you, carefully monitor personal belongings and documents, especially in crowded places.
It is better for women not to walk around the city unaccompanied. If you are persistently asked to meet local macho men, tell them you are waiting for your husband.
One last piece of advice: try to stay close to the center and avoid the outer parts of the city, especially at night.
