Nairobi is the capital of Kenya and the largest city in East Africa. From the Kenyan capital in sunny weather you can see the legendary Kilimanjaro, Africa's highest mountain.
To put it frankly, Nairobi cannot be called the most popular tourist city on the African continent. But since it is its largest transportation hub, the capital, regardless of the wishes of the tourist, is often the first object during the trip. Do not spare 1-2 days to see the local sights.
The population of Nairobi is more than 3.2 million people. About a million people live in poverty, which is the main reason for the high crime rate in the metropolis. Security guards and special protection equipment are used to ensure the safety of tourist sites.
The national currency of Kenya is the Kenyan shilling (KES).
The city of Nairobi was founded thanks to the supply station of the Uganda railroad - for its construction and maintenance created a small settlement of Indians. The place for the construction of the station (1899) was not chosen by chance - here the most favorable climatic and geographical conditions for such a transport hub. The town received its name in honor of the local reservoir Ewaso Nyirobi (means "cool waters" in Maasai). In 1900, the new settlement had to be burned down and rebuilt to stop an outbreak of plague. In 1905, Nairobi became the capital of the British Protectorate, and in 1963 it became the capital of independent Kenya.
