To Malta by car

Everything a motorist needs to know about Malta.

Malta doesn't have toll roads, and most of its roads, especially the paved ones, are in good condition. However, there is a percentage of unpaved roads in the hinterland of the main island, and for those, it's advisable to rent a jeep. Car rental is a convenient option for getting around in Malta. Local Maltese rental companies often offer more competitive rates compared to larger international rental offices. To rent a car in Malta, you will need to present your passport.

To rent a car in Malta, the driver should be at least 21 years old, although it's preferable to be 25 years of age, a requirement imposed by many local car rental companies. You can use either a national or international driver's license, and you'll need a bank card for the rental process.

When signing the rental contract, a deposit of 100-300 EUR is typically required. This amount is temporarily blocked on your bank card and will be released 16 days after returning the car. Rental prices usually include unlimited mileage as well as insurance coverage for damage, accidents, and theft.

While it's possible to rent a car at Malta's airport, it's advisable to make arrangements in advance by booking through the rental service's website. You don't need to visit the rental company's office to rent a car; simply make a phone call (English is required) to book your car. The car will be delivered directly to your hotel, and you can complete the contract on the spot. Be sure to check for any damage or scratches, and verify the presence of essential items such as an emergency stop sign, reflective vest, fire extinguisher, and first aid kit.

Car rental prices in Malta are generally affordable, although they may vary depending on the tourist season. An economy car (like a Ford Fiesta or Toyota Aygo) typically costs around 15-25 EUR per day. However, during the peak season (July-August), rental prices can increase by 20-30%, while in the off-season, they may decrease by 10-20%.
