Public transportation in Malta is represented by buses, cabs and ferries that run between the islands of the archipelago.
Buses operate from 06:00 to 23:00. The vehicles are yellow in Malta and gray-red in Gozo, so they are easily distinguished from the general traffic flow. The fare is taken by the driver (at the final stops it is done by the conductor), and to get off, you need to pull a special cord connected to the bell, or press the button at the window. Public transportation routes mainly leave from the central terminal before entering Valletta and go all over the island. Single-trip tickets cost 2.20 EUR, and the ticket allows a transfer within two hours. A daily ticket costs 2.60 EUR and a weekly ticket costs 12 EUR.
Route numbers starting with 100 are local, running within one settlement or city. At the same time, buses on such routes run quite rarely.
Intercity bus routes start from 200. Transit buses do not enter Valletta.
Gozo has bus routes starting at 300.
Routes connecting Malta's towns and cities with the airport are marked with an X.
Night buses operating after 23:00 are designated by the letter N. The route network of night buses is not the same as that of day buses, with a few exceptions. Night buses do not depart from Valletta, but from St. Julian's, Malta's main tourist center, where most of the country's nightlife is concentrated.
Ferry crossings between Malta, Gozo and Comino are important for this island nation. Ferries run from 06:00-6:45 to 23:00 with an interval of 20 minutes, travel time is half an hour, round trip fare is 4.65 EUR for an adult and 2 EUR for a child (round trip car transportation costs 15.70 EUR) for the Malta - Gozo line. Also all coastal towns are connected by private boats, both regular and excursion boats.
Cabs are very common, but they are quite expensive. There are two types of cars, black cars, which work only on order, their fare is less than the standard fare by 2 times, and white cars (the cost of the trip is set by the driver). It is recommended to choose a car only with a meter, otherwise it is better to negotiate the cost of the trip with the driver in advance. Travel from Valletta to the airport will cost 12-15 EUR, from Valletta to Sliema - 8-12 EUR, from Sliema to the airport - 20 EUR, to Mdina - 25-30 EUR.
And although the island itself looks like a huge city, interspersed with parks and forest parks, vineyards and groves, it is more convenient to move around it by transport. The streets and roads here are very winding.
