In August 2002, Acapulco experienced an earthquake, and in September, Hurricane Manuel struck the city. Large parts of Acapulco were flooded, leaving over 40,000 tourists stranded. Widespread looting occurred, leading to the closure of numerous shops, bars, and hotels. Some business owners faced bankruptcy or refused to pay protection money to criminal organizations.
Today, efforts by politicians and business leaders aim to restore the city's image and emphasize that Acapulco is a safe destination for tourists and entrepreneurs. President Enrique Peña Nieto has sought to leverage the visit of the U.S. president to Mexico to enhance the country's international reputation.
Tourists are gradually returning to the city. Nevertheless, it's important for them to remain vigilant. Travel agencies advise against solo travel in Acapulco, especially during nighttime hours.
