Where is Bar located?

Bar is one of the largest cities in Montenegro and serves as the center of the municipality. It is situated along the Adriatic Sea coastline. However, Bar isn't typically considered a resort destination for several reasons:

1. It hosts a large and bustling port, one of the country's largest, which can affect perceptions of water quality and beach ambiance, deterring some tourists.
2. The city can be quite noisy, making it less ideal for family vacations with children or elderly parents. Travelers seeking a quieter atmosphere may prefer nearby towns like Becici, Przno, or Petrovac.

On the positive side, Bar tends to attract fewer tourists compared to other Montenegrin resorts, as its local population is around 15,000-16,000 people. Additionally, accommodation prices here are more affordable.

The official currency used in Montenegro is the euro (EUR).

History of the City of Bar

The history of Bar dates back to ancient times, with evidence of human activity in the area dating back to the Bronze Age. However, the official founding of the city did not occur until the 6th century AD. Over the centuries, Bar has witnessed a series of transitions and conflicts:

1. During its early history, the city was inhabited by Slavs, Byzantines, and Catholic leaders.
2. In the 13th century, medieval Bar experienced a period of growth and development as it became part of the Serbian state of Nemanjic.
3. Subsequent years were marked by wars and changing rulers, with Bar passing between Byzantium, Serbian princes, and Venice.
4. The Ottoman Turks eventually occupied Bar, and the city was devastated towards the end of the 19th century.
5. In 1885, New Bar was established, which now comprises the main part of the modern city.
