When is the best time to go to Budva

Let's find out about the best time to vacation in Budva, as well as the weather conditions in the region.

Budva, Montenegro's tourist mecca, will appeal to even the most demanding traveler. It is surrounded by mountains on one side and the Adriatic Sea on the other. Add to this cocktail ancient fortresses and youth discos, and you will get a complete picture of the resort. When is it better to go to Budva? We'll tell you about the weather conditions in the city.

Weather

Spring

A good time to visit Budva for sightseeing tours. In March, the air temperature in the resort begins to "move away" from winter (+10-+15°C), and by the end of April, it reaches +18-+20°C. However, it is still cold in the evenings.

Summer

June to August is the best time to go to Budva. Allocate at least 14 days (including acclimatization time) and go to Budva! The weather will please you with temperatures around +23-+25°C (June), +28-+30°C (July-August).

Autumn

In September, the velvet season comes to Budva for two or three weeks. The thermometer consistently shows +24-+26°C, and the water is pleasant for swimming (+23°C). October is a changeable month, with temperatures varying between +16°C and +21°C.

Winter

During the winter months, Budva's coast may seem warm to residents of northern Europe. The daytime temperature reaches +12-+14°C, while at night it drops to +4-+6°C. Snow is rare in winter, but rain and fog are common. Sometimes, the sun does make an appearance. You can head to Montenegro's ski resorts during this time. In February, the mimosa blooms, signaling the approaching spring, making it a good time to visit Budva for 2-3 days to explore the city and the surrounding area.

Bathing season

The Adriatic Sea is characterized by many as crystal clear but cool. Montenegro's beaches constantly receive blue flags for water purity and safety. Let's find out when it's more comfortable to swim.

May-June: At the very beginning of the season, the water warms up to +18°C, and gradually, more people appear willing to plunge into the salt water, although not for long. By mid- to late June, the water is noticeably warmer, with temperatures reaching +21 to +22°C, and the number of bathers grows.

July-August: The most comfortable months for swimming. Warm waters (+24°C) beckon people to take a dip in the pleasant salty water. The number of vacationers also increases during this period, especially attracting families with children.

September: Velvet season for the Budva Riviera. The sea is still warm, especially in the first two weeks.

"Low season" in Budva

October-April are the months when it is cheapest to go to Budva. Many restaurants close in the off-season, and hotels offer discounts of up to 40%. This is the period when Budva is visited for sightseeing, and when New Year and Christmas are celebrated.

In the "low season," the resort hosts many entertaining events:

  • In October: Dan širuna fishing festival;
  • In February: Budvan Festival;
  • In April: Spring Masquerade.

"High" season

If you want to spend an active vacation and take advantage of all possible entertainment in Budva, we recommend going from May to September.

Montenegro is a country with a very rich cultural heritage that can be explored all year round, but it is better to go on excursions in the summer season so that the weather does not spoil your trip.

Beach Vacation

What's a seaside vacation without a gorgeous beach? Luckily, Budva offers tourists not only a rich cultural heritage but also a variety of beaches in the surrounding area. There's a choice for every taste, whether it's a whirlwind on the central beach or a secluded one on the outlying beaches.

On all beaches, you can rent an umbrella and a sun lounger for 10-20 EUR per set. If you want to save money, bring your own umbrella from home. It's hard to find them on sale in this resort.

If you're traveling with a large group, you can rent a boat to swim and sunbathe in the open sea or visit small coves or islands.

Slovenska plaza

There are small and medium pebbles, so it is more comfortable to take a sunbed. The coastline is quite long (1.5 km). This beach is very popular, so it is often crowded.

The beach offers everything for a comfortable vacation:

  • Showers and changing cabins;
  • Water activities and cafeterias;
  • Opportunities to buy fruit and boiled corn on the beach;
  • Souvenir shops.

Hawaii

This pebble beach is located on St. Nicholas Island. The water here is probably the clearest, but also the coolest. We recommend bringing your own food and drinks, as the island doesn't have a large selection of cafes.

You can get here either by taking a water taxi or a shuttle boat, which run every half hour before lunch and every hour after. The round trip will cost around 3 EUR.

Morgen

Located at a distance from the city, but expectations will be met. On the way, stop for a photo with the gymnast girl, one of Budva's symbols.

On the beach itself, the pebbles are very fine, almost like sand. And the color of the water looks like it belongs to Aivazovsky's brush. We advise you to enter the water carefully, as there are sea urchins on this beach.

Entertainment

Paragliding

The season lasts from May to September. It is in Budva that the highest paragliding site in the country is located. Here you can see Montenegro from a bird's eye view, fly over the mountains and coast, and you can even fly to the neighboring island of Hawaii. Prices start from 75 EUR.

Diving

From May to the end of October, you can enjoy the underwater world of the Adriatic. It is in the Budva Riviera where the most beautiful grottoes, sunken ships, and a fascinating marine world are to be found.

The Blue Cave, which is 60 meters deep, is especially attractive to divers. Many schools have professional instructors who speak Russian. Here, you can dive as a beginner without any experience, or as an experienced diver.

Aquapark

Operates from June to September. The entrance price is 18 EUR for adults and 15 EUR for children. On the territory, you have access to a variety of slides, bars, massages, and events.

Where to go on excursions

Excursion tours are available all year round, but the most favorable time for them is May to October.

If we talk specifically about Budva and the surrounding area, there are many beautiful bays next to the picturesque island of St. Nicholas, which can be reached by sea. Boat trips are more comfortable in the summer.

From the variety of excursions, we would like to recommend the following:

  • Tara and Moracha Canyons
  • The trip takes about 14 hours, but it is worth it. You will see many mountain rivers and canyons and visit the Durmitor National Nature Park.

  • Tour to monasteries
  • On the way, you will visit the main Orthodox shrines of Montenegro. The winding mountain road, which in itself deserves a separate description, will lead you to Ostrog.

  • Marine tour of Herceg Nevsky Bay
  • Tourists can enjoy the beauty of the sea, swim in the open sea, visit the Blue Cave, and visit the Presidential Beach of Janica. In addition, you will be served very tasty food.

  • Boko Kotor Bay
  • Another seaside adventure, not as long as the previous one, but no less charming. The highlight of the tour is a visit to the Virgin Mary Church on the cliff, and as a nice bonus, a visit to the millionaire city of Perasta.

You can purchase excursions from your tour operator if you are traveling with a package tour. If you are an independent traveler, you can find offers on various websites of tour bureaus or directly on the streets of the city. We recommend reading reviews of the companies offering their services before making a purchase.
