There are four places to swim in the city: three natural beaches and one artificial beach. The natural beaches in Puerto de la Cruz are covered with volcanic sand and in some places with pebbles.
1. Playa Martianez beach
The small wild beach of Playa Martianez is not equipped with showers, toilets, sunbeds. You won't even find lifeguards here - it's not popular with visitors. You can reach the beach only on foot, the access of vehicles is forbidden. You will have to walk on sharp pebbles, so it is recommended to bring beach shoes. Huge powerful waves of the Atlantic Ocean break on the sharp rocks of the shore. Only very confident in their skills can swim here. The beach is only suitable for sunbathing.
2. Playa de San Telmo
If you're looking for a pristine, natural but comfortable vacation, head to Playa de San Telmo Beach in the center of town. The cliffs jutting out into the ocean on either side of the beach keep the huge waves at bay, and it's safe to swim offshore, even if you're unsure of the water. The entire area (30m wide and 350m long) is equipped with showers, toilets and a string of small restaurants nearby.
