Salou is located in the eastern part of the Iberian Peninsula, on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea. The local sandy beaches are part of the famous Costa Dorada, where vacationing has always been considered the most prestigious in Spain. The city of about 15 square kilometers can be easily bypassed on foot.
The population of Salou is about 30 thousand people. Despite its modest size, the city has the status of a municipality - a self-governing administrative-territorial unit and belongs to the Catalan province of Tarragona.
The national currency is the euro (EUR).
The history of the settlement has more than 2 thousand years. Located in a convenient bay, the port of Salou was founded in ancient times and survived the rule of the Romans, barbarians, Moors, Visigoths and even Spanish pirates. Until the beginning of the XIX century the city was a successful center of trade, but later the port was closed, which preserved the ecology of the coast.
The establishment of Salou as a tourist center began with the construction of a railway station in 1865, thanks to which the local beaches were flooded with streams of tourists. The city received the status of a prestigious resort in the middle of the twentieth century.
