The regions of Tunisia are called vilayets. In total there are 24 vilayets in the country. This division was formed after the establishment of Tunisia as a republic.

Maritime regions of Tunisia

Jenduba.

The Wilayet of Djendouba is located in the northwest of Tunisia. It is bordered by Algeria on the west side. And the northern shore of Jendouba is washed by the Mediterranean Sea. The main city of this region of Tunisia is the eponymous Jendouba, where one of the Tunisian universities is located.

Beja.

The northern vilayet of Tunisia with the capital of the same name. The northern part of Beja falls on the Mediterranean coast. It is an agricultural region where much of the food for the people of Tunisia is created.

Bizerte.

This vilayet of Tunisia is washed at its northern end by the Mediterranean Sea. Of particular interest is its capital, Bizerte. This city, once a base for Mediterranean pirates, has two ancient fortresses.

Other interesting objects include the Alexander Nevsky Orthodox Church, unique for Muslim Tunisia. It was erected here in 1937 by the inhabitants of the Russian community. The vilayet also includes the Galit Islands, which are on the UNESCO heritage list because of their unique fauna.

Arjana.

This vilayet, bathed to the east by the Gulf of Tunisia of the Mediterranean Sea, can be called one of the most future-oriented regions of Tunisia. The capital of the same name is home to Tunisia's technical center, El Ghazala Technograd.

The region is also famous for growing roses. The Bir Belhassen Park with its 16,000-bush rose garden and the Rose Gallery are separate attractions. Also in the region, near the town of Aryana, are the ruins of Carthage.

Tunisia.

The smallest vilayet of Tunisia surrounds the country's capital. Tunis combines an ancient medina filled with the atmosphere of the old east, an area of modern seaside resorts and the cultural and business center of the country. A huge number of palaces are concentrated here, but it is also home to the University of Tunis.

Ben Arous.

The northern part of this vilayet faces the Mediterranean Sea. Among the cities in the region, Rades is particularly famous for its seaport and the Tunis Olympic Stadium.

Nabul.

One of the major vilayets of Tunisia, it occupies the Et-Tib peninsula. The peninsula is washed on two sides by the Mediterranean Sea - the Gulf of Tunis from the north and the Gulf of Hammamet from the south. The capital of the vilayet, Nabul, is famous for its pottery and the creation of perfume from orange blossoms, geraniums and bourbon. The ancient city of Hammamet is one of Tunisia's most popular resorts and a major thalassotherapy center. And Kelibia is home to a Byzantine fort and an international port.

Sousse.

This vilayet is bounded on the east by the Mediterranean Gulf of Hammamet. The capital of the region, Sousse, has everything you need for a varied and exciting vacation. Here and some of the best beaches in the country with thalassotherapy centers, and ancient architecture, and many restaurants of local cuisine. Sousse has a large shopping center, Ice Cream House, entertainment center and water park. And nightlife enthusiasts will find plenty of discos.

Monastery

Mahdia.

The capital of this vilayet, the city of Mahdia, is located on the Mediterranean coast. The city is one of the popular resorts in Tunisia. Some of the attractions include the medina of the city.

Sfax.

The waters of the Gulf of Gabes of the Mediterranean Sea wash the vilayet from the east. Its eponymous capital is famous for its ancient architecture and educational institutions. It is home to the Sfax School of Engineering and the Sfax Faculty of Medicine. Kerkenna archipelago belongs to the vilayet. These islands are valued by travelers because of the possibility of a secluded vacation alone with nature.

Gabes.

The center of this region, lying on the shores of the eponymous bay of the Mediterranean Sea, is the city of Gabes. This city is built in a palm oasis. Gabes is sustained by the Heart of Oueda reservoir with its irrigation canals. The city is the industrial center of Tunisia, here oil is refined and cement is made. And also in Gabes grow dates and pomegranates. The inhabitants of the city are also active in fishing.

Medenin.

The wilayet is washed by the Mediterranean Sea to the north, and the border with Libya runs along its eastern lands. Its center is the city of the same name with interesting old architecture, which was the setting for the movie "Star Wars. Episode I." The vilayet includes one of the most famous resorts in Tunisia - the island of Djerba.

Mountainous regions of Tunisia

El Kef.

The western side of this region faces the border with Algeria. Among the attractions of its eponymous capital are the city's kasbah and museums. Within the vilayet are the outcrops of the Atlas Mountains.

Siliana.

This is one of the central vilayets of the country, surrounded on all sides by other regions. On its territory there are many ancient monuments, such as the majestic arch in Maktar. On the territory of the vilayet there are outcrops of Atlas Mountains.

Zaghvan.

The most interesting place in this picturesque vilayet of Tunisia is Mount Zaghvan, part of the Atlas massif. This peak rises to 1295 meters.

Manuba.

One of the small northern vilayets of Tunisia. Its center is the city of Manouba with its picturesque architecture. The region is partially occupied by the Atlas Mountains.

Sidi Bou Zid.

The Wilayet is located almost in the very center of Tunisia. Its capital is the city of Sidi Bou Zid, which has a very modern appearance. The Wilayet is about half occupied by the outcrops of the Atlas massif.

Kasserine.

The Tunisian border with Algeria runs along the western part of this vilayet. This mountainous region is home to the Jebel Chambi Natural Park. Within its boundaries is Mount Chambi, which is 1544 meters high. It is the highest point in Tunisia.

Kairouan.

The spurs of the Atlas Mountains overlook this wilayat. But its most significant place is the region's capital of the same name. It is the fourth holiest city in the Maghreb and has preserved many historical monuments. Kairouan is on the UNESCO heritage list.

Gafsa.

Most of the territory of this vilayet is occupied by the outcrops of the Atlas Mountains. The capital of the region, the city of Gafsa, rose on the site of an oasis that served as a refuge for ancient Christians.

Desert regions.

Tauzar.

This wilayat is home to the saline lake of El Jerid. The main tourist inflow is provided by the date oasis near the capital Tawzar. It is also home to the city of Nafta, the country's second religious center with 24 mosques.

Kebili.

The majority of this vilayet is desert. The only exception is Lake El Jerid, part of which is located within the region.

Tatawin.

The border with Libya runs along the eastern part of this desert vilayet and Algeria along the western part. Highlights include the Berber grain warehouses of Xara in the regional capital of Tatawin. The region is otherwise known as Tatooine. It was in honor of this place, where Star Wars was partially filmed, that George Lucas named the planet Tatooine.
