Boston's public transportation
Rail, water, bus, and subway are part of the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority's (MBTA) unified system and are denoted by the letter "T". The state capital's subway was built in 1897 and was the first in the United States.
A word of advice for travelers in Boston: buy an all-day ($12 USD) or weekly ($19 USD) ticket rather than a single ride. It's more cost-effective. A daily/weekly ticket for bus and water transportation in Boston costs the same amount. Commuter rail fares vary by zone.
