Sölden became a separate entity at the beginning of the 19th century.

Selden as a ski resort can be considered to have been founded in 1948, when the first ski elevator was built, and has been booming ever since. In the 1970s, two elevators connected the villages of Hochzelden and Geislachkogl, and after the construction of the Giggijochbahn, a real tourist boom begins.

The number of overnight stays in the village of just over 4,000 people now reaches more than 2 million a year. Selden is currently attracting the largest amount of investment. After joining the eurozone, the euro became Austria's currency instead of the Austrian schilling.
