Borovets (or Chamkoria) is the largest resort in Bulgaria, open from November to May. The slopes of the famous Bulgarian Rila Mountains, where Borovets is located, have long been considered one of the symbols of Bulgaria. It is nestled at the foot of Musala Peak which is 2925 meters above sea level.
The history of Borovets goes back to the middle of the 19th century, when the kings of Bulgaria took fancy to the picturesque slopes of the Rila Mountains for hunting. Borovets was founded in 1896. It was used for hunting by such famous personalities as Tsar Boris II, Kaiser Wilhelm and members of the European aristocracy. The first ski competition of international level was the world biathlon championship in Borovets in 1933. Since then, the resort has become one of the leading ski slopes for competitions at various levels.
