It is hard to tell if there are real rainy seasons in Ischia Ponte and on the island of Ischia itself. Temperatures begin to drop in September, which is still considered a summer period. The weather remains warm and the autumn is velvet. Thunderstorms do occur in March.
When the rainy season starts in Ischia Ponte people start to leave the resort. This usually happens at the end of October. The rains reach their peak in late autumn with only a few hours of sunshine a day and the waves can become very cold and fierce.
Winters are mild, with temperatures dropping to around +6-7°C at night and frosts hardly ever occur. You might see an occasional 0°C below freezing at the top of the hills. December is the month with the heaviest rainfall, falling all day long. Low clouds cover the sky and the Tyrrhenian Sea reaches up to two metres high. At other times, though, the sea is gentle and calm, although that depends a lot on which beach you choose. On the small beach of Cava Grado, for example, there are always waves and they can be over a metre high.
Flora and Fauna
Thanks to its rich plant life, the island of Ischia Ponte is called the emerald or green island. The vegetation in Ischia Ponte represents the full richness of the southern Italian region. It includes myrtle and lemon trees, palms, evergreen shrubs, and flowering plants that bloom year-round. Just climb the slopes of the dormant volcano Mount Epomeo to encounter the full diversity of the island's natural paradise.
Many exotic flowers are cultivated on the island. You will also come across citrus fruits, eucalyptus, olive trees, and coniferous trees. In the thermal parks, there is a carpet of plants that adorn architectural structures. These include fragrant jasmine, chamomile, geraniums, roses, and many others.
The fauna in Ischia Ponte and its surroundings is not very diverse. This can be attributed to the volcanic nature of the island and human activity. At the foot of Mount Epomeo, you may encounter sheep and goats, which are raised by local shepherds. Swallows, wagtails, thrushes, and goldfinches populate the surrounding groves, while seabirds nest in the cliffs. Predatory falcons can also be found here.
