Basic information about Singapore

Basic information about this miniature city-state.

Singapore is a tiny city-state (only 778m²) in Southeast Asia. It is located just off the equator (1 degree north), so temperature fluctuations are minimal: Singapore has no winter or summer in the traditional sense, and the thermometer reads between +23 and +30ºC almost all year round.

There are no natural sources of fresh water in the city - it used to be imported from Malaysia, now it's desalinated from the sea and carefully stored in reservoirs (there are about two dozen of them on the map of Singapore). And one more important fact for tourists: despite its proximity to seismically active zones, there is no threat of earthquakes in Singapore.

Panorama of the city of Singapore

Singapore was founded many centuries ago - the first mention scientists found in Chinese manuscripts of the II century. However, until the mid-20th century, the city was part of the British Empire or Malaysia. In 1965 it gained independence and very soon became one of the most prosperous cities in Asia!

Singapore's population (about 6 million people) is extremely heterogeneous: the majority are Chinese, followed by Malays and Indians. And, it should be noted, Singapore has something to learn from in matters of tolerance: all conflicts on ethnic grounds stopped here in the 1970s. You can go to jail for a month for making a racist comment on a Singaporean social network!
