Where is Puerto del Carmen located ?

History of Puerto del Carmen: significant events and interesting facts

Despite its resemblance to a labyrinth, Puerto del Carmen is as instantly enchanting as Lanzarote itself. Beaches in beautiful coves, an active volcano, caves created by lava flows, fish restaurants, colorful towns and quaint villages, a scattering of chrysolite on the Atlantic Ocean.... All this does not leave even the sophisticated tourist indifferent.

The island of Lanzarote was named after the Genoese merchant and navigator Lanzarotto Malosello, who landed here in 1312. The women of the fiery island had three or four husbands each, who took care of the household, servants, and raised the children.

In 1402, Jean de Betancourt arrived on the island of Lanzarote and later made it a base for the conquest of the rest of the Canary Islands. Many locals were sold into slavery. Those who remainedthose who remained survived attacks by marauders and pirates from the northwest African coast.

The now-popular resort of Cueva de los Verdes was a haven for those who failed to escape to the neighboring island of Gran Canaria. British pirates also attacked and plundered the fiery island, reducing Lanzarote's population to 300 by the mid-17th century.

In the 1730s, for 6 years, the island experienced massive volcanic eruptions that destroyed almost all settlements and fertile land. Years later, the islanders discovered that the volcanic soil was very fertile for agriculture, particularly grapes.

A former fishing village of Puerto del Carmen now has become the center of tourist life on the island.
