The village of Puerto del Carmen was named after the Virgin of El Carmen, the patron saint of fishermen. On the town's day, July 16, the n sails a route along the coast of Lanzarote. Tourists can also join in the celebration. Puerto del Carmen has survived volcanic eruptions, long periods of drought and pirate attacks. From other settlements on the island, over time locals began to move to Puerto del Carmen, developing the local culture.
One of Puerto del Carmen's main attractions is the Saramago Museum-House of Nobel Prize-winning Portuguese writer and poet José Saramago. Here you can visit the playwright's large library-home, where he spent the last 18 years. The museum is located on Calle los Topes 2 in Thias.
Another Puerto del Carmen attraction is El Varadero Dock, which is part of an old fishing village and the heart of the modern resort. El Varadero Dock is called the most emblematic place of Puerto del Carmen's coastline. It is located in the old neighborhood of La Tinosa. Even today you can still find local fishermen on the dock. In addition, there are many restaurants with summer terraces where you can enjoy seafood dishes and good music. Also, there is a bowling club in the dock area.
