Back in 1956 the resort was declared a museum city, which means that to find attractions in Nessebar will be an easy task. Of course, their search should lead you first of all to the Old Town. Just there you can admire the perfectly preserved remains of (and sometimes completely intact) churches, fortresses and buildings. And they represent a variety of historical periods — from antiquity to the Middle Ages.
Some people call Nessebar the City of 40 Temples. And that's because on the map of its attractions you can easily notice four dozen ancient sanctuaries, clustered on a small piece of island land. The most ancient of them, the Metropolitan Church, was built here in the 5th century. The Church of St. Stephen, which appeared four centuries later, is famous for its impressive collection of frescoes as well as religious items dating back to the 16th century. Looking at photos of local attractions, you can be convinced that one of the main decorations of this place is undoubtedly the Church of Christ Pantocrator.
Besides its churches, Nessebar also has other attractions worth visiting. During the high season, it’s easy to spot groups of tourists gathering to capture one of the town’s most recognizable landmarks — the old windmill. It has become an iconic symbol of the resort, evoking images as inseparably associated with other cities as the Eiffel Tower is with Paris or Big Ben is with London. Equally intriguing is the old Turkish bath.
