Beaches of Deauville

Deauville beach review: we'll tell you which one is best.

In Deauville, there’s no need to choose the best beach — there is only one. But it can easily be called one of the city’s main attractions. Deauville Beach stretches for several kilometers. It is very wide and impeccably clean. Every day, cleaning machines tidy it up and even sift the sand.

Originally, the shoreline was entirely clay. But when the town was transformed into a resort for the bohemian elite, fine sea sand was brought in and completely covered the coast. Soft sand and flawless cleanliness make Deauville Beach one of the best spots for a family holiday with children.

Along the entire beach runs the famous wooden promenade Les Planshes with cabins named after Hollywood stars. These Art Deco–style cabins were built in the 19th century for the wives and daughters of aristocrats. Back then, ladies did not swim or sunbathe — they simply admired the scenery and enjoyed the sea air. Interestingly, this tradition was first broken right on Deauville Beach.

The “beach revolution” was carried out in 1922 by the eccentric Coco Chanel. She declared that an “aspirin-colored” complexion was out of fashion and went sunbathing and swimming in rather daring attire — the forerunner of today’s bikini.

Her “swim” was reported by every French newspaper at the time! Coco Chanel opened her first boutique in Deauville, selling women’s swimsuits that flew off the shelves like hotcakes.

By the way, if you want to rent a cabin with your favorite actor’s or actress’s name on it, just pay 20 EUR for a day’s rental and it’s yours.
