Despite the constant influx of migrants from former German colonies and Middle Eastern countries, the level of safety in the capital remains high. The universal advice applies: beware of pickpockets in the busiest tourist areas such as Alexanderplatz, the surroundings of the Cathedral, and the Palace Bridge.
It is advisable to avoid walking in neighborhoods such as Lichtenberg, Treptow, and Marzahn during the dark hours. Always carry a copy of your identification documents as Berlin police may request them, and if your identity cannot be immediately established, they may take you to the police station for the night.
