Places to visit if you are a first time visitor to Chania.

When you come to Chania, besides the beaches and restaurants, be sure to visit:

Firka Fortress. It was built by the Turks in the 16th century. From it you can get excellent photos of the sights of Chania, located in the Old Port. It was here in 1913 that the Greek flag was raised for the first time after Crete became part of Greece.

Maritime Museum in Chania

Maritime Museum. It houses collections related to the history of navigation, a Minoan ship, ship's household items, and navigational instruments. Janissary Mosque Chania, Crete

Cathedral of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary (Cathedral of the Three Martyrs). The building was built in the XIX century. Decorated with paintings by Greek artists. Tourists are allowed into the temple on any day free of charge.

Greek Orthodox Cathedral Trimartyri in the Old Town of Chania

The Archaeological Museum is located opposite the cathedral, in the former church of St. Francis Monastery on Halidon Street. In the museum's garden you will find an ablution fountain, reminding you that the building once served as a mosque. Inside there are jewelry, floor mosaics, sarcophagi with marvelous paintings and other exhibits from the Neolithic, Bronze and Iron Ages. You can see them for 1-3 EUR.

The family estate of Eleftherios Venizelos. The house of the prominent statesman is a 20-25 minute walk east of the Old Town. The manor houses authentic belongings of the famous Cretan. Entrance is 2 EUR.
