This picturesque resort is surrounded by oleander trees that bloom almost all year round. Rethymnon has retained its ancient appearance, and its narrow streets are still lined with Venetian buildings and Turkish mosques. The main historical attraction of the city is the Fortress of Forteza, built in the XVI century by the Venetians, then destroyed by Muslim corsairs and rebuilt. Those who are interested in the past of Rethymno, should also visit the Archaeological Museum, which collection contains exhibits dating back to 700 BC.
Definitely take a stroll along Rethymnon's beautiful promenade. There are plenty of restaurants and stores here, but prices tend to be higher than in other parts of the city. Check out the Old Port, where the lighthouse, built in 1864, is one of the resort's trademarks. Interestingly, it is still functional and used for its intended purpose.
There are several ancient monasteries in the vicinity of Rethymno, as well as Agrego Farm, where you can spend the whole day or come for a couple of hours to have dinner in a tavern. From Rethymnon it is convenient to reach attractions such as Balos Lagoon, Agriroupoli Springs, Lake Kourna, Samaria Gorge.
