One of the most popular tourist destinations in Rethymno is exploring the Old Town. Here, Byzantine temples stand alongside Venetian buildings dating back to the 15th-16th centuries, and charming houses adorned with flowers. Some of these houses appear more like floral greenhouses than residential buildings.
Despite the labyrinthine layout of the Old Town, it's difficult to lose your way amidst the vine-covered structures. Most of the narrow streets, some barely a meter and a half wide, lead to museums or monasteries. Rethymno's historic quarter also has the advantage of being mostly car-free.
Be sure to explore key attractions such as the 16th-century Lodge (located near the Venetian port), the Guora Gate, the mosques of Veli Pasha, Kara Musa Pasha, and Neradze, the Erofili Theater, the Church Museum, the Cathedral, the Center for Contemporary Art, and the City Pinakothek with its exhibition of works by Levteris Kanakakis.
And for a delightful conclusion to your day, consider dining at one of the coastal tavernas. Sipping a glass of traditional Greek wine while illuminated by the setting sun adds a special touch to the experience.
