The public transportation system in Rhodes is more than well developed. However, experienced travelers prefer to use car rental services, and you can rent a car right at the airport.
The companies offering car rental services include both large international companies (Hertz, Avis, Budget, Sixt, etc.) and small Greek firms. The assortment pleases the eye even in the "high season" - from economical small cars, to premium cars. You don't need to book a car in advance.
According to Greek law, car rental services in Rhodes can be used by persons at least 23 years old, with an international driver's license and driving experience of at least 1 year. On the roads, the European rules apply. Please note that fines in Greece are quite high: for speeding - from 40 to 350 EUR, for running a red light - 1050 EUR, for parking on the sidewalk - 120 EUR.
The cost of renting a car in Rhodes depends on the season, duration of rental, rental point (the longer the term, the cheaper the rental in Rhodes), insurance, cost of fuel and additional services. The average price of a middle class car is from 30 to 50 EUR per day. The cheapest price is to rent a small car - from 22 EUR per day. Local companies in Rhodes offer car rental without a deposit.
To save money, we recommend renting a car for a longer period of time. If you plan to stay in Rhodes for four or five days, rent a car for a week or eight days and save at least 20%. For example, if you rent a mid-range car, such as a Ford Fiesta, you'll pay 24 EUR for one day, but if you rent it for a week, you can save 100-110 EUR.
A more budget and mobile option is to rent a scooter, scooter or bicycle (from 50, 15, 8 EUR per day respectively).
Parking spaces are plentiful in Rhodes, but don't go into the center with a car: the streets are narrow and traffic is heavy. Parking lots in Rhodes are marked with multicolored lines: white line - parking is free, blue - payment at the nearest parking lot (1.5 EUR per hour), yellow - parking is prohibited.
One of the most popular free parking lots is around the local stadium. Just note that according to Greek traffic rules, parking is prohibited within 5 meters of intersections and traffic lights, and within 15 meters of crosswalks and bus stops.
