Basic information about Netanya

Briefly about the main thing: the past and present of the resort of Netanya.

Netanya is located in the Sharon Valley, 30 kilometers north of Tel Aviv and 50 kilometers south of Haifa. The city's population is approximately 185,000 people.

The currency used in Netanya is the Israeli New Shekel (ILS).

The city was named after the renowned philanthropist Nathan Strauss, who was the founder of Macy's and Abraham & Straus department stores in the United States. He donated two-thirds of his fortune to the development of Palestine, including the establishment of Netanya and other settlements.

In 1928, lands in the Arab village of Um Khalid were purchased by the Jewish National Fund and used for the establishment of a settlement here. To this day, the acquisition of land during the British Mandate period remains a point of contention between Palestinians and Israelis.

Netanya was founded on February 18, 1929. Its first residents were young members of the Bnei Binyamin organization from Kfar Tavor, Eastern European immigrants who chose these lands for agricultural settlement. They were led by Oved Ben-Ami, who soon became the mayor of Netanya.

The initial residents of Netanya, like many other settlers in the fertile Sharon Valley, were actively involved in citrus cultivation for export, known as the "orange fever."

In the 1930s, diamond processing rapidly developed in the city, thanks to refugees from Belgium. As early as 1934, Netanya saw the establishment of its first diamond cutting and polishing factory.

Netanya gained city status in 1948. Over time, neighboring settlements, including Dora, Kiryat Nordau, Ramat Poleg, and Ein Ha'Tchelet, were gradually incorporated into its territory.
