During the day, Catania is completely safe if you follow standard safety precautions. People here are very open and friendly, many speak English, and the streets are clean and beautiful. However, in crowded areas, beware of pickpockets and thieves on scooters.
After dark, it is not recommended to walk through unfamiliar neighborhoods or enter dark, deserted alleys. All central streets of the city are heavily patrolled by police and military personnel.
Try to avoid evening walks in the market areas of Fiera, Corso Sicilia, and Pescheria.
