History of Gaeta

The coast of Italy is closely connected with ancient myths and mysterious stories. According to legend, Gaeta was founded by the Trojan hero Aeneas, who buried his nurse Gaeta here. Later, Emperor Antoninus Pius built a harbor at this site and began actively developing it. Even after the fall of the Roman Empire, the city remained under Constantinople's control until the 7th century, when it adopted a republican system.

In the distant year of 951, the dukes took over the rule, recognized the Pope's authority, and acknowledged him as their sovereign. Gaeta endured plundering and invasions before joining the Kingdom of Sicily in 1140. The Norman rulers invested in the city’s revival, building many palaces, churches, and residential houses.

In the 15th century, the heirs to the Neapolitan throne fought fiercely over the city. Until 1861, Gaeta was claimed by Austrians, Spaniards, and French, before finally becoming part of the unified Kingdom of Italy. In the 20th century, the city became a popular resort with a well-developed infrastructure.
