Many tourists begin exploring a new country through its cuisine. Italian national cuisine is delicious, diverse, and capable of satisfying even the most discerning gourmet.
We strongly recommend creating your own list titled “What to Try in Tropea” to make sure you don’t accidentally miss out on a delicate dessert or a signature meat dish while on holiday.
Tropea is famous for its sweet red onion, which is added to most dishes and often takes center stage on the menu. Sometimes, it reaches the level of absurdity: onion jam or even onion ice cream. Here, the red onion is stewed, boiled, and fried — so you’ll inevitably taste it as a complement to your chosen meal.
In Tropea, you can also find ‘nduja — a soft, spreadable sausage often served on bread or added to pizza and pasta. This dish is a hallmark of the entire Calabrian coast. But be cautious: it is extremely spicy. To give you an idea, ‘nduja is made with 500 grams of red chili per 1 kilogram of meat.
Another fiery element is chili pepper, which is not only added to sausages but also baked into bread, turned into jams, and used in vinegar and oil infusions.
Tropea’s signature cheese — Pecorino del Poro — is also on the list of must-tries along the Italian coast. Made from sheep’s milk, it has spicy notes and comes in a variety of shades, from yellow to red.
And don’t forget the olive oil! Order a seafood salad dressed with extra virgin olive oil and enjoy the richness of its bold and expressive flavor.
