Where is Viareggio located?
Viareggio is located in the Italian region of Tuscany, specifically in the province of Lucca. This city, situated on the coast of the Ligurian Sea, is the capital of a resort area called Versilia.

A Bit of History
The fashionable Italian resort of Viareggio began as a small fishing village. It was founded in the 16th century, but it only gained city status in the early 19th century. At the time of its founding, it was the only seaport for the city of Lucca, and to this day, the Matilde Tower, which protected Viareggio from sea raids, has been preserved in the city.
At that time, the population of the city did not exceed a few hundred people, mostly living off fishing. Over time, Viareggio developed, the surrounding marshes were drained, new buildings were constructed, the population grew, and even factories appeared. In the 18th century, when a drainage system was established around Viareggio, this place became of interest to Italian wealthy individuals.
A new round of intensive development came at the beginning of the nineteenth century, when beach holidays became fashionable and Viareggio began to attract tourists from all over the world. It was then that the Passaggiata, the famous town promenade, was laid and Viareggio became one of the best fashionable resorts on the coast.
Viareggio is also famous for its architecture. Although the city was severely bombed during World War II, it was rebuilt rather quickly afterwards. Today there are almost no old buildings left in the city, but the postwar eclectic and art deco buildings are very interesting.
