Split Attractions

Places to visit if you are a first time visitor to Split.

Any map of Split attractions will first point to the city within the city - Diocletian's Palace, which is separated from Split by a high wall. In this "inner city" are many monuments of ancient architecture, including:

Peristyle Square, Split

Peristyle: This is a square adorned with marble columns, originally constructed during ancient Roman times for ceremonies. It occasionally hosts evening concerts, making it a vibrant part of Split's cultural scene.

Jupiter's Temple: An ancient temple built by the Romans, later converted into a Christian church during the Middle Ages, is a fascinating historical site in Split.

The Cathedral of St. Domnius: This cathedral is one of Split's most iconic landmarks, constructed on the site of Diocletian's ancient mausoleum during the Middle Ages. St. Domnius, after whom the cathedral is named, was a Christian minister in Split who was executed under Diocletian's persecution of Christians. For a fee of 10 HRK (5 HRK for children), you can ascend the bell tower and enjoy panoramic views of the city from a height of 60 meters. Be sure to wear comfortable shoes for the climb, as the steps can be small and slippery.

Jupiter Temple, Split

The Split sightseeing map shows several museums, including the very interesting Archaeological Museum, which houses a collection of fascinating objects from ancient times. Here you can learn about the time of Diocletian, explore early Christian relics, and see artifacts preserved from the Byzantine Empire. Entrance ticket costs 20 HRK, and children's tickets are available for 10 HRK.

The Meštrović Gallery, founded about 100 years ago, is also among the most interesting attractions in Split. If you appreciate art objects made of bronze, marble, wood, and stone, this gallery is a must-visit (tickets cost 40 HRK, with reduced rates for students and pensioners at 20 HRK).

Also on the list of Split attractions, you will probably come across the ruins of Salona, which are located on the northwest exit from the city, near the industrial suburbs. If you want to travel back two thousand years in a time machine, wander through unique ancient sites, and take in the atmosphere of Split's living museum, this is the place to visit.
