Funchal's beaches are regarded as some of the finest in Portugal, even though they are mostly covered in pebbles. Yes, they may be small, surrounded by rocky shores, and have stony entrances into the water. However, this hasn't stopped them from consistently earning EU blue flags for their impeccable cleanliness and environmental friendliness.
Just like in most resort towns, Funchal's upscale hotels offer their own beaches with amenities such as sun loungers, umbrellas, towels, and changing cabins. However, there is a fee for access for everyone except hotel guests.
Among the best free beaches are:
Praia de Sao Tiago, located next to the famous yellow Sao Tiago fort. Facilities here are limited to showers;
Praia Formosa, the largest free beach on Madeira Island, consisting of four different sections: Praia Nova, Praia Formosa, Praia dos Namorados, and Praia do Areiro (the last two are located outside the city limits);
Doca do Cavacas, a cozy beach complex with natural pools and direct access to the ocean. There's a special tunnel leading to Praia Formosa beach;
Lido, a pool complex in the tourist area of Funchal (easiest access is via Lido Street). It features two saltwater pools, water slides, and a playground;
Praia do Gorgulho, a small urban pebble beach along Lido Street with showers and toilets.
Generally, Funchal's beaches are family-friendly, and you can choose any of them for a great time!
