Funchal's beaches abound with all kinds of water activities such as wakesurfing, wakeboarding, parasailing and water skiing. All the necessary equipment can usually be hired from the hotel.
However, experienced surfers prefer to congregate at other beaches on the island. Some of the most popular beaches are considered to be Paul do Mar on the northwest coast of the island (wave height here sometimes reaches 8 meters!), Ponta Pecana (waves with the so-called left spot), Lugar de Baixo (fast empty waves) and São Vincente (slow calm waves for beginners).
