Summer
Summer in Funchal arrives in early June (the water warms up to +20-22°C) and lasts until almost mid-September. The peak of the tourist season is August, although by resort standards, the air temperature at this time can hardly be called sultry: +25°C is the "ceiling". Summer in Funchal is dry, you can not be afraid of sharp cold and precipitation. July is the ideal time for windsurfing.
Autumn
Autumn is the start of the velvet season in Funchal, with water temperatures allowing swimming until around mid-October. The air and water temperatures are about the same - +20-22°C. We don't recommend visiting Funchal in November, which is considered the rainiest month in the resort.
Winter
Funchal is nice in winter, with air and water temperatures never dropping below +15-16°C. However, it is in the winter months that the maximum amount of precipitation falls, although there is no clearly defined rainy season in Funchal (precipitation falls regularly from November to March).
In winter and early spring, those who are more interested in history and all sorts of festivals (especially the New Year's fireworks show and the February carnival) go to the city. By and large, New Year's Eve in Funchal can be called the second "high season" (thanks to the show programs), but beach vacations will have to wait until summer.
Spring
For leisurely strolls through the ancient streets of the island's capital, the ideal time of year is mid-April to mid-May, when the rainy days of fall and winter are behind us. But it's too early to think about a luxurious tan at this time - it's still too cool for a beach vacation at the resort (the average air temperature is +17-19°C). But you can take part in the flower festival, which runs from March to May.
When is it cheaper to go to Funchal?
The most economical time to visit Funchal is from November to March. If you want to combine a sightseeing program with a swim in the ocean, it is better to come to Funchal at the end of May - prices are still moderate and the weather is more than pleasant. From June onwards, prices tend to increase by an order of magnitude.
