City Transportation
Madeira Island is served by three transportation companies:
- Horarios do Funchal - operates bus routes in Funchal and beyond. Buses can be identified by their bright yellow color. Ticket options include single fares, tickets for a certain number of trips, and passes for a certain number of days. The price of public transportation tickets depends on the distance, and you can purchase a ticket from the driver.
- SAM - operates intercity buses and transportation for groups of tourists. SAM buses, painted in white and green colors, can take you from the airport to Funchal. Fares vary depending on the distance.
- Rodoeste - serves routes in the western part of the island.
Tip for tourists: It's advisable to buy bus tickets at bus stop kiosks as you can save at least 20%. For example, a ticket for two trips purchased at a kiosk will cost about 2.20 EUR, while paying the driver for one trip will cost about 1.8 EUR. Additionally, keep in mind that buses only stop on demand, signaled by a bell. If you're waiting for a bus at a stop, make sure to signal it, or it may pass you by.
Local Transportation
A special category of public transportation in Madeira includes the tourist network of hip-hop buses and yellow buses. These buses offer one ticket for two cities at once and are accompanied by a guide. Tickets can be purchased either on the bus itself or at special kiosks.
