The main feature of Heraklion's climate is its variability. From late March to November, the temperature range is from +22°C to +35°C, while in winter the thermometer can drop from +18°C to +10°C in a single day. Summer in Heraklion is very dry and hot (in the mountainous neighborhoods of the city is a little cooler), winter is mild, but with constant rain. Compared to other resorts in the city, the average winter and summer temperatures in Heraklion are 2-3 degrees lower than in the south (but the sea temperature is about the same everywhere in Crete).

Life in Heraklion is sparse: cats, dogs and noisy cicadas in the oleander bushes. For more exotic fauna you have to go to the surrounding areas. For example, in the mountains, the animal world of Heraklion is "represented" by wild goats, badgers and many lizards, which literally swarm the rocks. The vegetation of Heraklion is much more diverse (since Crete is an island, a separate ecosystem has formed here). Typical local vegetation includes cypresses (Heraklion's wood was once used to build ships for Egyptian pharaohs!), palm trees, Europe's largest plane trees, fruit trees and acacia trees.
