Water temperature in the Aegean
The bathing season in the city can be opened in May - by this time the water temperature in the Aegean Sea warms up to +20°C. From June to September the sea temperature in Heraklion ranges from +24 to +27°C, and the bathing season ends in early November (although frequent rains can spoil the swimming season).
Be aware that the northern coast of Crete is very windy, so waves in the Aegean Sea often rise within Heraklion. For the same reason, many people don't recommend spending the holiday here with small children - it's better to go to the outskirts of the city, for example, to the quiet bay of Agia Pelagia (about 25 kilometers from Heraklion). In Heraklion, however, the tides are practically non-existent and the entrance to the sea is gentle on all beaches.
