How to get to Heraklion from the airport?

If you are going to travel to Heraklion on your own, explore all possible routes from the nearest airport to the tourist center of the city.

You can get from Kazantzakis Airport to the city:

  • by shuttle or regular bus. The shuttle buses that take passengers directly to their hotels are parked near the terminal. However, there is a drawback: if the transfer is shared, you may have to wait several hours on the bus for other tourists. As an alternative, we recommend taking bus No. 78: the trip takes 15–20 minutes and the ticket costs a little over 1 EUR;

  • by taxi — in Heraklion they are gray with a “Taxi” sign. The ride to the city costs about 20 EUR (1.20 EUR starting fare and 2.60 EUR per kilometer to the city). Tipping drivers is not mandatory, but tourists often leave about 10% of the fare;

  • if you rent a car, you can reach Heraklion via the E75 highway.

From Chania Airport, a taxi ride to Heraklion will cost about 150 EUR. It is much cheaper to take a bus (the stop is near the terminal). A regular bus will take you to the Chania bus station in 25 minutes (2.30 EUR), and from there you can continue to Heraklion. The whole trip takes about 3 hours and costs around 14 EUR. Schedules and fares can be found on the website.
