The cuisine of Crete is famous for its olive oil, without which almost every local dish can't do without, delicious fish and seafood, as well as ecologically pure cheeses (enfotiro, kefalotiri, brynza).
The most famous Cretan drink is the healing and tonic mountain tea (diktam, malotira). Many restaurants in Heraklion serve raka, a Greek vodka, as an aperitif.
Another peculiarity is the abundance of specific appetizers on the table, for example, fish caviar mousse (taramosalat) and tomato appetizer with cheese and olives are very popular. Dairy products worth trying include goat's milk ice cream and Cretan yogurt (with honey). Any meal ends with a pastry shop - here they are called zacharoplastio.
