Almost all beaches on the island are sandy, with white, yellow or black volcanic sand. But not in Kos town - here beaches with rather coarse pebbles and clear water prevail. Frankly speaking, the beaches in the city limits of Kos are not the best - in the central part it is simply impossible to swim (too large stones, on which the waves hit). A slightly more acceptable option - small sandy beaches near the port or Kos Marina, but yachts and boats heading to the port will often pass by.
We recommend not sunbathing in the town itself, but getting out into the suburbs and nearby villages. All beaches are municipal and free of charge - you only need to pay for the necessary accessories. The average cost of two sun beds and an umbrella is 5-8 EUR per day (some beach taverns or restaurants offer these accessories for free if you make an order).

4 kilometers from the center of Kos is the large beach of Lambi. Sometimes on maps it is labeled as New Alikarnassos. This beach is good for family vacations with children in Kos - there is a gentle entrance to the water, fine white sand and a small wave. Windsurfing is also possible on the beach.
In 3.5 kilometers from the center of Kos is one of the most popular beaches of the island - Psalidi. Here you can find a lot of restaurants and small taverns serving fresh fish and traditional Greek snacks. The beaches are equipped with sunbeds and umbrellas, you can surf - the beach is not protected from the wind, so there are good waves. For the most beautiful sunsets come to Agios Fokas beach (famous for its bright turquoise waves). By the way, from this beach you can see Turkish Bodrum on the horizon.
Tigaki beach is located 11 km away from Kos, where kitesurfing and surfing lovers hang out because of the constant waves. The beach stretches for almost 11 kilometers, the sand here is predominantly dark in color. The main disadvantage is slightly overpriced taverns and attractions.
