Where is Kos located?
Kos is the main town of the Greek island of the same name, which is located in the Aegean Sea. The population of Kos island is about 33 thousand people, most of them (about 15 thousand) live in the administrative center.
The national currency is the euro (EUR).
Kos is considered to be almost the most ecologically clean place on the planet - there is almost no industry here, and the locals are engaged either in agriculture or work in the tourist sphere. The characteristic scenery here is the white-washed buildings of Kos surrounded by palm trees, small picturesque villages on gentle slopes, ruins of ancient temples and a huge number of goats!
History of Kos
The resort town of Kos, founded in 366 BC, is the administrative center and largest port on the island. The capital has repeatedly been compared to ancient Babylon - so many cultures are mixed here! It was first inhabited by ancient Greek tribes of Dorians, then Kos was repeatedly conquered by the Persians and the Macedonian fleet.
In the Middle Ages Kos was ruled by the Knights Hospitallers, then for 400 years the island was part of the Ottoman Empire, and in the twentieth century Kos became controlled by Italy. After surviving German occupation during World War II, Kos is finally reunited with Greece in 1947!
In its modern form, Kos was rebuilt after 1933, when the island was hit by the last major earthquake. Today it is a very green town with picturesque promenades, well-maintained beaches and cozy pastry shops.
