Basic information about Calella

In a nutshell: the past and present of the resort of Calella.

Where is Calella?

The resort town of Calella is located on the famous picturesque Catalan Costa del Maresme, between Barcelona and Girona.

Calella has a temperamental Spanish character: here, the sounds of passionate flamenco replace the understated tune of sardana, and the delicate flavor of cazuela overpowers the spicy taste of gazpacho.

The population of Calella is just over 18,000 and the resort covers an area of 8 square kilometers. The national currency is the euro (EUR).

History of Calella.

The first settlements on the Costa del Maresme date back to the 1st century B.C. For decades, wheat was grown here, flavored olive oil was produced, grapes were cultivated....

Calella was founded in 1338 when Viscount Bernat II of Cabrera received royal permission to trade and build houses in the region. Since then, Calella has grown steadily, gradually transforming from a provincial fishing village, shipbuilding and textile manufacturing center to a major tourist center.

Today Calella welcomes travelers from all over the world!
