The resort enjoys a warm Mediterranean climate - San Remo is protected from the cold winds by the Apennines, while frequent rainfall is not typical of the area either. The main feature of Sanremo's climate is the relatively comfortable air and sea temperature all year round.
For example, the maximum temperature in Sanremo in August is 25-27°C, and in winter the thermometer practically never drops below +15°C. This means you can party all year round - of course in February the bathing season will be closed, but you'll be able to breathe in the curative Mediterranean air without the rush and crowds of tourists.
Sanremo's climate has also influenced its natural features - you'll find yourself in one of Italy's most "flowery" resorts with palm trees and citrus trees in the streets and no hotel or shop is without its well-kept flowerbeds. By the way, carnations for the Christmas holidays in Europe come all the way from San Remo!
Flora and Fauna of Sanremo
In the surroundings of the capital of the Ligurian Riviera, you'll see a typical Mediterranean landscape: Sanremo’s vegetation includes olive and cypress groves, oleanders, and of course, palm trees. The most famous palm-lined promenade is located along the main seafront, Corso Imperatrice.
These palm trees were specially brought from Egypt and planted at the end of the 19th century thanks to local philanthropists and patrons. The promenade itself was named in honor of one of the city’s noble benefactors. By the way, Sanremo is also home to the largest flower market in Italy (and perhaps all of Southern Europe) — Mercato dei Fiori, located near the Cathedral of San Siro. The scents of roses, carnations, and hibiscuses here are simply overwhelming!
This rich plant life in Sanremo is mainly due to the area's record number of sunny days — Liguria is considered one of the sunniest regions in Italy.
Sanremo's fauna is sparse due to human activity; wild roe deer and fallow deer can occasionally be spotted outside the town. Spiders and scorpions, not the nicest of Sanremo's wildlife, sometimes crawl onto the beaches, so be careful if you decide to sunbathe without a sun lounger.
