The resort enjoys a warm Mediterranean climate - San Remo is protected from the cold winds by the Apennines, while frequent rainfall is not typical of the area either. The main feature of Sanremo's climate is the relatively comfortable air and sea temperature all year round.
For example, the maximum temperature in Sanremo in August is 25-27°C, and in winter the thermometer practically never drops below +15°C. This means you can party all year round - of course in February the bathing season will be closed, but you'll be able to breathe in the curative Mediterranean air without the rush and crowds of tourists.
Sanremo's climate has also influenced its natural features - you'll find yourself in one of Italy's most "flowery" resorts with palm trees and citrus trees in the streets and no hotel or shop is without its well-kept flowerbeds. By the way, carnations for the Christmas holidays in Europe come all the way from San Remo!
Vegetation and Wildlife of San Remo
In the surroundings of the capital of the Ligurian Riviera, you will see a typical scene for the Italian Mediterranean - the vegetation of San Remo is represented by olive and cypress groves, oleanders, and, of course, palm trees. The most famous palm-lined avenue is located on the main promenade, Corso Imperatrice.
These trees were brought from Egypt and planted here at the initiative of the Russian Empress Maria Alexandrovna (in fact, the promenade was named in her honor). By the way, it is in San Remo, near the San Siro Cathedral, that you will find the largest flower market in Italy (and perhaps in all of Southern Europe), Mercato dei Fiori - the scents of roses, carnations, and hibiscus here will make your head spin!
The diversity of San Remo's plant life is primarily due to the record number of sunny days per year - Liguria is considered one of the "clearest" regions in the country.
Sanremo's fauna is sparse due to human activity; wild roe deer and fallow deer can occasionally be spotted outside the town. Spiders and scorpions, not the nicest of Sanremo's wildlife, sometimes crawl onto the beaches, so be careful if you decide to sunbathe without a sun lounger.
