History of the city of San Remo
San Remo was founded by the ancient Romans, who established a small fortress near the present-day city in the village of Matutia to fend off Saracen attacks. Over time, San Remo (named after the hermit Saint Romulus) became part of the Republic of Genoa and lost its independence.
Among foreigners, San Remo gained particular popularity thanks to the novel "Doctor Antonio" by Italian author G. Ruffino. The atmosphere of the city attracted many guests. San Remo gained a reputation as a fashionable resort, and this reputation continues to this day. However, global fame came to the city in 1951 when the first Italian Song Festival was held in San Remo.
