Zakopane is the highest altitude city in Poland. It is located at an altitude of 750-1100 m above sea level in a narrow basin between the only Alpine Tatra Mountains in Poland and the Gubalowka mountain range. The unique terrain where Zakopane is located is the Tatra National Park, which attracts more tourists not only in the ski season, but also in summer. The total number of tourists visiting Zakopane reaches 2-3 million people a year.
The history of Zakopane goes back to the 16th century, to the reign of the Polish King Stephen Bathory. Zakopane was founded in the mid-16th century. In 1676, a small settlement on the site of the present spa town had only 43 inhabitants.
