Climate in Nice

Learn all about the climatic conditions of Nice and the flora and fauna of the resort.

The climate of the resort is defined by the Mediterranean weather, which is pleasant and suitable for holidays all year round. In summer, the air temperature in Nice can reach up to +30°C, but there is never exhausting heat. Humidity is low, and the coastline is refreshed by the breezes of the Mediterranean Sea. Rain is rare from June to August, unlike in April and September–October, when the rainy season begins in Nice.

The city enjoys around 300 sunny days a year. The coastline is protected from northwesterly winds by the Mercantour Alpine range and from the west by the Esterel massif. Winters at the resort are mild and warm, with temperatures rarely dropping below +5–10 °C. One of Nice’s climate features is that in February you can easily have lunch on a balcony wearing just a T-shirt, while on a summer evening at a concert in the Cimiez gardens you might need to throw a light sweater over your shoulders.

Flora and fauna of Nice

The capital of the French Riviera is like a large garden overlooking the sea. There are evergreen deciduous shrubs, citrus trees, eucalyptus, horse chestnut, blue date palm, jasmine, mimosa and so on. The city has about two dozen parks and gardens: the Vinegar Park (Le parc du Vinaigrier), Parc Chambrun, Jardin du Monastère de Cimiez, Parc Phoenix and others, which are home to exotic animals, birds and reptiles.

On land, Nice's most common wildlife is dogs, mostly small breeds. There is a real dog cult here. The animal is equated to a family member (a child). They take them with them to the beach, cafes and temples.

In the sea there is a high probability of encountering jellyfish. This critter is quite dangerous off the coast of Nice — touching it can cause burns.
