Car hire in Rome

Tips for those wanting to find an inexpensive car hire in Rome.

The price of car rental in Rome ranges from EUR 40 to EUR 100 per day depending on the car class (the longer the rental period, the cheaper it is). Payment can be made with Visa, Euro/Master Card, Amex (American Express), Diners credit cards and is only available to persons over 21 years of age.

It's difficult to find a rental car in Rome without a deposit. The maximum amount required is 500 EUR. Car rentals in Rome are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Tips for finding affordable car rental in Rome:

  • Insurance: It’s best to get full coverage (Full Insurance) for 10–20 EUR per day — in Rome, it's very easy to scratch a car, even while parking.

  • Cheap rental cars can be found right after arrival — at Leonardo da Vinci Airport (Fiumicino) or Termini railway station. Average prices start from 25–30 EUR/day for an economy class vehicle.

  • Speed limit: Do not exceed 50 km/h in the city — speeding fines range from 42 to 173 EUR for minor violations and up to 700 EUR for major ones.

  • Parking: Free spots are marked in white, paid in blue (usually 1–2 EUR/h), and yellow for taxis or disabled permits. Black-yellow stripes mean no parking. The sign "Zona a Traffico Limitato" (ZTL) indicates restricted entry on weekdays from 7:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. — violation may cost up to 100 EUR.

  • International driver’s license is recommended, especially if you’re from outside the EU. In case of an accident, local police may treat the absence of one as driving without a license.

  • Refueling: Be sure to refuel the car before returning it — otherwise, the rental company will deduct a fee for fuel at an inflated rate from your deposit.
