Neptune Fountain in Batumi

We will tell you about the incredibly beautiful fountain of Batumi, as well as how to get to it.

Batumi has plenty of fountains worth seeing. Let’s recall the singing fountains, for example. But there is another charming creation — the Neptune Fountain. It's definitely worth a walk and a few photos.

Information note

The fountain has adorned Theatre Square since 2010. It was installed in place of the monument to Georgian poet Ilia Chavchavadze, which was moved across from the Drama Theatre. This decision upset many Batumi residents. A year after installation, some parts of the fountain were gilded, making it even more attractive.

This work by Georgian artists closely resembles the fountain in Bologna. In fact, that’s where the idea came from. Of course, the Italian version looks better, but the Georgian Neptune also draws many tourists.

The fountain looks quite unusual — the sea god himself and four mermaids with bare chests from which water flows. These mermaids, by the way, sparked a lot of discussion among the locals. People believe the fountain is too provocative and explicit — especially for a central city location.

Neptune is located near the Drama Theatre, which we highly recommend visiting — or at least admiring the building. It was renovated three years ago. Plays are performed in Georgian, and tickets cost 5–15 GEL.

Theater Square

The Theater Square, adorned with the Neptune Fountain, is a small and cozy square. It is often frequented by leisurely strollers and locals. There are comfortable benches available for tired passersby, although they may be in direct sunlight during the day.

Surrounding the square, you'll find beautiful residential buildings, casinos, and hotels. One side of the square is adjacent to Batumi's central street, Rustaveli Avenue. If you walk a little further, you'll reach Europe Square. Hungry travelers are advised to visit cafes offering freshly baked khachapuri, a delicious Georgian dish.

How to get there

If you enjoy walking, the best way to reach Theater Square is by foot. You can explore the beauty of Batumi along the way. If you have a car or bicycle, you can drive to Rustaveli Avenue and the fountain will be at the beginning of the avenue. Don't worry about parking; there is parking available near the Dramatic Theater.

If you prefer not to walk and don't have your own transportation, you can take a minibus numbered 1, 1a, or 10 to the "Theater Square" stop.
