Batumi has plenty of fountains worth seeing. Let’s recall the singing fountains, for example. But there is another charming creation — the Neptune Fountain. It's definitely worth a walk and a few photos.
Information note
The fountain has adorned Theatre Square since 2010. It was installed in place of the monument to Georgian poet Ilia Chavchavadze, which was moved across from the Drama Theatre. This decision upset many Batumi residents. A year after installation, some parts of the fountain were gilded, making it even more attractive.
This work by Georgian artists closely resembles the fountain in Bologna. In fact, that’s where the idea came from. Of course, the Italian version looks better, but the Georgian Neptune also draws many tourists.
The fountain looks quite unusual — the sea god himself and four mermaids with bare chests from which water flows. These mermaids, by the way, sparked a lot of discussion among the locals. People believe the fountain is too provocative and explicit — especially for a central city location.
Neptune is located near the Drama Theatre, which we highly recommend visiting — or at least admiring the building. It was renovated three years ago. Plays are performed in Georgian, and tickets cost 5–15 GEL.
